Beliefs/attitudes surrounding mental health wellness, cultural irrelevance, mistrust, and exclusion of spiritual and religious engagement are a few factors contributing to Black Americans’ lack of participation in traditional counseling (Sanchez-Hucles, 2001; Primm, Suite, et al., 2007; Stansbury et al., 2012; Neighbors, 2007)).
Subsequently, awareness education and perceptions of what healthy coping and counseling entail are often lacking (Mattis et al., 2007; Allen et al., 2009).
This literature review supports the notion that while Black Americans trust and seek out their pastors/church leaders more often than other mental health care providers and report less sadness, hopelessness, and worthlessness compared to Caucasians (Office of Minority Health, 2012) their mental health symptoms are sometimes masked due to maladaptive coping strategies demonstrated in the form of unhealthy behaviors (Jackson et al., 2009).
Stress buffering effects are thought to occur via behaviors such as cigarette smoking, overeating, alcohol use/abuse, substance use/abuse and John Henryism (a practice of working excessively to prove oneself in the workplace), to name a few.
Although, in the short term, stress buffering alleviates symptoms of psychological distress, it can produce lasting psychological dysfunction and physical health decline if stress symptoms remain unnoticed and unaddressed (Horowitz, 2007; Snyder, 1991)..
Yet, culturally relevant and faith-based, psycho-educational intervention models are limited for these groups who do not desire/use traditional professional counseling (Davey & Watson, 2008).
Alternatively, culture relative models encompassing spiritual values, social activities, and means of safe self-expression carry the propensity to buffer psychological distress symptoms such as anxiety and depression (Snyder, 1999; Ferraro & Koch, 1994).
Considering such findings, I seek to expand previous research and address a need by proposing a pre-intervention counseling/educational alternative in the context of a faith based program setting.
To that end, a theoretical literature review was conducted to better understand some of the existing and emerging theories and frameworks to better guide the design of proposal.* .
The pilot feasibility is my proposed project as part of the fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in Christian Counseling..
