A fundação e ereção canônica da Paróquia de Santa Teresinha ocorreu em 1983 decretado pelo Bispo Diocesano Dom Frei Vital João Geraldo Wilderink, O.Carm (in memoriam); ela foi desmembrada da área da Paróquia de Nossa Senhora das Graças situada no Cruzeiro.
A igreja conta com 7 Comunidades e 4 Capelas distribuídas pelo Município de Seropédica, nos bairros de Boa Esperança, Fazenda Caxias, Parque da Serrinha, Santa Sofia, São Miguel e Cabral..

Em 1997, Seropédica tornou-se município independente de Itaguaí.
Seu nome advém de um neologismo formado por duas palavras: uma, de origem latina, sericeo ou serico, que significa seda, e outra, grega, pais ou paidós, que significa tratar ou consertar.
