Si estende su una superficie di più di 135.000 m2 ed è il secondo più grande palazzo d'Europa dopo il palazzo del parlamento rumeno.
Al suo interno ospita uno dei più celebri musei d'arte del mondo, il Museo del Louvre ma anche una scuola superiore di storia dell'arte, l'école du Louvre, ed il museo delle arti decorative di Parigi.
