Detailed description is Home of the World Famous "OwlBurger".
When Frank Chavez came home to San Antonio, New Mexico in 1945 after serving in the U.S.
Navy during the “Great War”, he and his wife Dee opened a little bar in the grocery store operated by Dee’s father, J.E.
Meira.
J.E.’s grocery had been serving the needs of the local folks since the late 1930s..

Frank and Dee called their place the Owl Bar, and it soon became the hangout for a handful of so-called prospectors who had recently moved into the little community.
Turns out these “prospectors” were actually atomic scientists who would later activate the famous Trinity Site explosion, the first test of a new weapon called the Atomic Bomb.
Soon after the test, that bomb would be used; devastating the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and bringing an end to World War II.

At the request of the “prospectors” and other local patrons, Frank installed a grill behind his bar and began serving hamburgers, and his green chili cheeseburger became local legend.
Dubbed the “Owlburger”, its recipe has remained unchanged since 1948..

Nowadays, Frank’s daughter Rowena and her husband, Adolph Baca, operate the Owl Bar in much the same way as did Frank and Dee.
The bar itself, reclaimed from Conrad Hilton’s first rooming house in San Antonio, still supports the elbows of numerous passers-by.
