Otello è una tragedia di Shakespeare scritta agli inizi del XVII secolo.
La prima rappresentazione documentata ebbe luogo il 1º novembre 1604 al Whitehall Palace di Londra.TramaOtello è un moro, al servizio della repubblica veneta, al quale è stato affidato il compito di comandare l'esercito veneziano contro i turchi nell'isola di Cipro.
All'inizio del dramma, Otello parte da Venezia in compagnia del luogotenente Cassio.
Lo avrebbe seguito Desdemona, sua moglie, scortata da Iago e la sua consorte Emilia.
Desdemona è sposata con Otello in gran segreto, ma la circostanza viene svelata da Iago.
All'arrivo, scoprono che la flotta turca è stata distrutta dalla tempesta.L'infido alfiere Iago tenta in vari modi di far destituire Cassio, riuscendoci infine con uno stratagemma, grazie all'aiuto di Roderigo.
Con l'ignara complicità della moglie Emilia, Iago fa arrivare un prezioso fazzoletto di Desdemona tra le mani di Cassio, convincendo Otello (che osserva di nascosto su consiglio di Iago) del tradimento di Desdemona.
Le false difese di Cassio da parte di Iago, e le sue studiate reticenze, sono la parte centrale dell'opera di persuasione che sfocia nella furia cieca del Moro.
Otello uccide Desdemona nel letto nuziale soffocandola, travolto dalla gelosia.Nell'immediato epilogo, Emilia rivela che il tradimento di Desdemona era soltanto un'invenzione di suo marito Iago, il quale freddamente la uccide seduta stante.
