Raised on an active family farm he learned to work with his hands and solve problems at a young age.
These skills transitioned well into a successful high school career at Blue Earth Area High School where he participated in numerous extra curricular activities that ranged from sports to fine arts.

Kalis attended the University of Minnesota Duluth.
While there he played on the very successful UMD Lacrosse team and earned defensive player of the year honors twice in the Upper Midwest Lacrosse League.
He would go on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2001.

Kalis continued his education by attending Northwestern College of Chiropractic in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) credentials in April of 2005.
