.
WEST TORRENS.
.
West Torrens were formed in 1943 as a junior team in an attempt to keep the game alive during the war.
In 1945 the club became the first to win the first grade premiership undefeated.
Interestingly in 1945 clubs using the West Torrens name claimed the South Australian rugby, football and soccer premierships.
In 1952 the club won both both the first and reserve grade premierships and only missed on on a clean sweep after forfeiting from the third grade preliminary final.
The club won another premierships in 1961..
.
The club experienced some lean years until 1981 when they made their first grand final appearance in twenty years.
This was followed up in 1988 with a first grade premiership and the 1989 sevens titile.
During the 80s the Eagles were known as a team that played with flair.
The 1988 premiership is immortalised in the club by a nude premiership picture..
.
Unfortunately the club soon went into decline and were relegated to second grade for the first time after finishing winless in 1996.
The annual report of 1997 said the club was being 'held together by veterans' which highlighted how the clubs player base had eroded.
During the 1998 season the club merged with North Adelaide to form the modern day 'Dragons'..
.
The best known West Torrens player is Henry Dijiksman who became the first player to win three Don Smith Medals (1988, 1992-93) and also captained the state.
Notable representative appearances include Wayne Brennan (1 Conversion) and Robbie Sen in South Australia's win over Fiji in 1976 at Norwood Oval.
Dijksman and Don Harris (1 try) played in South Australia's win over Zimbabwe in 1987 at Bailey Reserve.
Lynton Moore became the last player from the club to represent South Australia in 1996 against Canada..
.
West Torrens were originally based at Hindmarsh Oval (now Hindmarsh Stadium).
Unfortunately in 1959 the club was forced off Hindmarsh Oval.
Other than playing the occasional home game at West Beach the club remained homeless until 1974.
In 1970 the club secured a lease on some land at Dry Creek which was ready to host its first game in 1974.
Some speculate that relocating to the excellent facilities in the industrial area of Dry Creek was one of the causes of the decline in senior and junior players..
.
.
.
NORTH ADELAIDE.
.
The original North Adelaide club was formed as North Adelaide Baptist in 1933 by members of the Adelaide club.
The club quickly dropped its church affiliation but disbanded just after the war..
.
In 1952 old North's supports with the help of boys from the Nailsworth school revived the club.
North's have had two successful eras where they claimed back to back premierships: 1958-59 in Division Two and 1981-82 in Division Three.
Interestingly in 1997 North's finished fourth and last in their division but still claimed the premiership..
.
Early games were played in North Parklands and players had to deal with animals which grazed on the area.
North's moved to Shutter Reserve in 1966 but had to share it with many other sports.
In 1998 the club relocated to Dry Creek and eventually merged with West Torrens to form North Torrens.
.
Mark Sowter, now a Dragons stalwart and son of club founder John Sowter, is the only North Adelaide player to claim any first division awards after twice being named the South Australian Rugby Union best tackler..
.
North Adelaide.
.
1997 Division 2B Premiers (25-6 v Woodville).
.
NORTH TORRENS DRAGONS.
.
The new club experienced early success with a grand final appearance in 1999 followed by a premiership in 2000.
In 2003 an influx of players saw the club compete in reserve grade for one season.
Unfortunately decline soon set to the point of the club's future being in doubt.
In 2004 the club even considered relocating.
A remarkable off field performance in 2011 saw the debt erased despite the team finishing last..
We are looking to increase our playing stocks and are hoping to build from the ground up by having juniors and 2 senior teams plus a women's team.
If you haven't played before or experienced come and play rugby with The North Torrens Dragons.
A family friendly club..
