Detailed description is We provide educational breed information and co-ordinate Pug Rescue/re-housing New Zealand wide, under the umbrella of The Wellington Pug Dog Club Inc. . The Wellington Pug Dog Club established a policy in 1999, for the rescue and re-homing of Pugs. At this time a Health and Welfare fund was set up to cover costs involved with taking care of these dogs. With the increasing popularity of the breed came the concern of more indiscriminate back yard breeding & puppy farming, Pugs being purchased on impulse by people who were not fully aware of what Pug ownership can involve, or the potential costly health issues, hence the possibility of more Pugs needing rescue and re-homing. . . We take in Pugs of any age, including those with health issues. Most are able to be placed into pre-approved new loving homes. Those that are unable to be placed because of age or health problems get to live out their lives in one of our own homes. We accept Pugs from all sources e.g. Animal Control, other Animal Welfare Organisations or owners who can no longer care for their dog.. . Unfortunately our breed is one that has several health issues and few breeders who do adequate health testing of breeding stock. Quite a few new owners purchase puppies unaware of many aspects of this breed and what is involved with owning the Pug. Because of this an important part of what we do is in supplying breed information to prospective owners. We feel it is very important that people are as educated as possible, BEFORE they purchase. If you, or someone you know, could benefit from this info email us at nzpugrescue@gmail.com and ask.. . If you are thinking of applying to adopt a rescue Pug, there are a few things to be considered. We are picky and make no apology for that. Different breeds have different needs in a home so we look for homes that best meet the needs of the Pug breed. The Pug is a very old breed, has no other purpose than as a household companion to people. He was not bred to hunt, herd, guard, but to be with people, so we will only place our Pugs into homes that can meet this need for human companionship. If your home does not have someone in it for much of the day then the Pug will not be as happy as he should be. PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE THINKING OF APPLYING FOR A RESCUE PUG ONLY DO SO IF THERE IS SOMEONE HOME FOR MUCH OF THE TIME. WE DO NOT EXPECT PEOPLE TO BE HOME 24/7, BUT WE WILL NOT PLACE PUGS INTO HOMES WHERE PEOPLE ARE OUT AT WORK ALL DAY. THIS IS NOT A REFLECTION ON THE HOME, IT IS SIMPLY WANTING HOMES BEST SUITED TO ANY PUG AND MORE ESPECIALLY TO A RESCUE PUG WHO MAY NOT HAVE HAD THE BEST LIFE BEFORE COMING TO US.. Pugs need security, a bit like a human toddler, secure fences and gates, not placed at risk of being hit by a vehicle, or of being stolen. We will request to do a home check to see for ourselves. We will ask that a high quality diet be fed, recommending NZ made Grain Free Addiction (both dry kibble and dehydrated fresh), Blackhawk Lamb & Rice kibble, Acana, Now Fresh and K9 Natural. We will request that a Pugs weight is maintained a good healthy level. Too many Pugs die too early simply because owners allow them to become grossly overweight. We will not place any Pug unless it has been desexed first. Many of the Pugs we get arrive with pre-existing health conditions so prospective owners need to think seriously as to what they can manage, both in the hands on time needed and the ongoing costs. All Pug owners need to be pro-active in providing regular care of ears, eyes and facial folds. Annual dental checks are a must, as are annual specialist eye checks. If all these things are not for you then the dog will suffer and that is not what we want for our Pugs. We ask that Contracts be signed at the time a Pug is adopted. First for a one month Trial period (when the Pug remains the property of our rescue service), then a Lifetime Contract once all parties are happy that the placement is successful. We appreciate new owners doing us the courtesy of joining The Wellington Pug Dog Club Inc.. . If you are thinking of getting a puppy then we strongly recommend doing your homework first. DON'T buy a Pug puppy from a Petshop or any online auction site like Trade Me. No reputable breeder of Pugs ever sells puppies through such places. Animals purchased via these means are usually being bred purely for monetary gain & little thought is given to the care in which they are produced. Buyers have little guarantee as to parentage of such puppies, health history of parents and how the puppies have been raised. It is very much BUYER BEWARE! Also keep in mind that NZKC Registered does NOT always indicate an ethical, responsible breeder. Some of the most unethical and most prolific Pug puppy farmers in NZ are also members of the NZKC. . . ** If you think you can provide the right home and are interested in adopting a Rescue, please email us at nzpugrescue@gmail.com for an Adoption Application Questionnaire. Please provide full contact details as it is nice to know who we are communicating with. Once we have received your questionnaire it will then be processed and if accepted you will be advised if we get a Pug that may suit your situation. We cannot give any guarantee as to when, or if, we will get a Pug that best suits the individual home. This is not a reflection on the home, we simply do not have any control over what Pugs come in, when they come in, or what their particular needs could be.. . . If you know of a Pug in need of our help please don't hesitate to get in touch.. . If you have any questions about any aspect of what we do, then please email and ask.
