Detailed description is A nonprofit founded to help adults over 40 w/Down syndrome and their single sibling caretaker (or surviving parent) to gain residence in intentional communities to be built (throughout the United States) with this main purpose in mind.

*MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK!* To that end: NEST will accomplish the aim of independent integration (of DSers) via two primary means: (1) with outside support systems for which the DS adults already qualify or will become eligible (or further eligible) owing to their newly independent resident status and (2) with the shared participation of the other residents, as is common in all cohousing communities.
NEST believes that because “many hands make light work,” no one person or family will be overburdened.

Homes will be accessible and adaptable and will contain separate suites for overnight caretakers.
The specific designs will allow for either two roommates plus the caretaker suite or for separate bungalows/casitas/small ranch-style dwellings with the caretaker suite situated in the center and accessible to and from both residences.

Preference for inclusion will be given to the eldest of Down syndrome adults and sibling caretakers, especially those who (a) cannot afford to build homes of their own and (b) have not been materially provided for by the deceased or otherwise absent parents.

As NEST expands, we will include other family-member caretakers (surviving elderly parent or aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, e.g.) and adults w/other intellectual disabilities.
In the interim, family caretakers who can afford to do so will be welcomed to buy a home in a compatible* NEST coho community..

NEST will not be seeking any form of government funding if it will dictate or otherwise limit or impose restrictions on any aspect of the cohousing communities or the residents therein.
*What makes cohousing work is that each community is made up of residents who are compatible and agreeable to the form, design(s), purpose(s), operation, and decision-making guidelines of the intentional “neighborhood” they have formed.
Any outright grants with no inhibiting strings attached will be considered.
