Renville,

Minnesota,United-states - 55342

Detailed description is Nelson Family Land - Section 5, Hector Township, Renville County, Minnesota, United States of America, North America, Earth, Our Solar System, The Universe Section 5 lies at the center of North America.
It has a landscape of rich agrcultural soil, hill and plain, creek and pond, prairie and woodwd wind breaks.
It sits astride the Superior Upland, a portion of the ancient, long-eroded rock core of North America, and the Central Lowlands, a geologically younger region of gentle hills and plains..
.
Section 5 is located in south central Minnesota, about 100 miles from Iowa, South dakota and Wisconsin.
.
.
Our part of Section 5 encompasses 205 acres of the state’s 84,068 square miles of land.
Minnesota also has 4779 square miles of water.
Section 5 has approximately 30 acres of water..
.
Section 5’s surface waters flow south into the Gulf of Mexico via the Buffalo Creek, then the Crow River and finally into North America's largest river system, the Mississippi.
.
.
Most of Section 5’s land surface is gently rolling.
The elevation of the land ranges from 1084 feet in the basin of Lake Alma on southeast corner to 1143 feet at the top of Mount Toby Just behind the house.
The highest point in Renville County and greatest local relief is found here on Section 5.
An elevation change of nearly 60 feet occurs within the section and an 85 foot change occures from Mount Toby on Section 5 to the Hector Airport.
.
.
On Top Of Mount Baldie-by Steve Nelson.
.
I can barely remember the house where Grandma and Grandpa Nelson used to live on Section 5.
I think I get most of my memories of it from photo’s I’ve seen.
.
.
I remember the house being there but abandoned and falling down.
I recelect I was 8 -10 years old then.
I do remember Dad tearing it down and and burning it one night.
.
.
I remember going in the barn when the barn was the only thing left there.
I would stop by the barn while farming and go inside and even go up in the hay loft.
There was nothing in the barn at all except a few old stantions.
I also remember thinking what a pain it was farming around it and stuidly one night I burned it down myself.
.
.
After the barn was gone there was nothing left at all except broken glass, junk and rocks.
We also took the driveway out and that was it, nothing left but a few memories..
.
I always stopped on the top of the highest hill whenever I worked the farm, I would plan my lunch stop around stopping on top of “Mount Baldie” as my Dad would refer to it.
I would sit up there for as long as possible, enjoying the view and thinking about how I would like to have a house up there.
After all it was supposedlly the highest point in Renville County.
I think I remember Dad saying the highest point in Hector Township, “woopie”.
I always said Renville County.
I call it “Mount Toby”.
.
Dad once told me that I told him I wanted to build a house on top of the hill when I was very young, like 5-7 years old.
I do not remember that but I believe it.
And guess what ? It happened!! And I’m glad we did.
I’ve enjoyed living there since the first trailer house in the fall of 1984.
I’ve always felt it was a unique location and everyone that has been there agrees.
We’ve had comments like “wow what a view” or “it looks a lot higher from up here than from the road” or even in 2005 our priest Fr.
George walked in, just in time for before meal prayer at Shea’s first communion, and had to stop and say “ Oh my god what a beautiful view” He loved it and so do we..
.
I not only remaned Mount Baldie to Mount Toby but I named the west pond Lake Alma after Grandma Alma it was a pond when she lived there and I believe she enjoyed looking at it more than anyone else.
The center pond is called Nelson Lake after the whole family.
The little swamp by the gravel road and by the old driveway is called Marvin Marsh after Dad who was little then and the new pond by the highway is called Ernie’s Edge after Grandpa Ernest..
.
I’m really glad I put the farm into wildlife habitat it is just beautiful now and gets better every year I hope my children and my children’s children, and so on and so on, enjoy it for years to come and have good memories of it and of me and Doreen, just as I do of Section 5 and my Parents and Grand Parents.
Thanks
