The National Board Council of New York (NBCNY) is an affiliate network of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
We strive to provide awareness and establish support structures for teachers and school districts to pursue the National Board Certification process.
We also work to increase the number of teachers that pursue national certification and develop effective NBC support programs across the state.
Since establishing the Shanker Grant in 1999, which subsidizes the $2,500 fee for pursuing National Board Certification, New York State has consistently had about 100 teachers certify each year.
To date, more than 1,600 teachers in New York State have achieved National Board Certification..

Founded in 1987, after a task force from the Carnegie Forum on Education and the Economy proposed that teachers, like doctors, should have their own voluntary process of national certification, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) was established as a voluntary national system of certification based on high and rigorous standards for accomplished teaching.

In time, National Board Network Affiliates were established to serve as coalitions of NBCTs who impact teaching and learning in their schools and districts by supporting quality teaching, promoting high standards of learning and advocating for National Board Certification.
