Dorothy Oyer, known to generations of grandkids as, NannyO.
A gathering at her home in Omega Ohio, was right out of a Norman Rockwell painting, complete with the men & boys rabbit hunting in snow covered fields, while she & women prepared their specialties days in advance, in NannyO’s case on her wood fired stove… pecan, rhubarb, cherry, blackberry pies, fresh baked breads, fried rabbit, green bean salads….

The smells & sounds were magical, still are in my memory.
In that cornucopia of fresh harvest & homemade treats, magically sat her jars of "Bread n Butter Pickles”, home made Kraut, corn relish, and many other treats canned within moments of being harvested from PaPaw O’s garden.
In each jar was much more than cucumbers, vinegar & salt.
Recently brought from the darkness of the root cellar their shades of brilliant color glowed with life.
In them were memories of PaPaw O hand plowing the garden, sowing by hand, weeding until twilight as fireflies took flight, countless stages in a labor of love..

Memories of picnics on open fire pits down by the crick, where sweet corn was enjoyed with juicy Beefsteak tomatoes.
Those same fire pits upon which NannyO had canned to stock their root cellar.
I hope you enjoy not just the incredible flavor that still causes the mouths of her descendants to water decades later, but also the sounds, smells, and memories of a wonderfully magical time & the way of life of hard working country folk all over America..
