Detailed description is Il museo di Storia Naturale del Pollino, prende origine dal rinvenimento di fossili di pachidermi effettuati all'inizio degli anni 80 in località Calorie (Rotonda), sulla riva sinistra del fiume Mercure (Lao in Calabria).

Nel 1982, Mario Caldarelli, in vista di alcuni lavori privati, nel suo terreno, a pochi metri di profondità, accidentalmente, rinviene delle grandi ossa fossilizzate e le segnala al Comune di Rotonda..
Negli anni successivi viene scavato lo scheletro quasi completo dell'Elephas antiquus italicus nonché alcuni resti di Hippopotamus antiquus.
Nel 1997 si rinviene anche una mandibola di rinoceronte (stephanorhinus cf.
S.
Hundsheimensis)..
A partire dal 2005 riprendono le campagne di scavi promosse dal Comune di Rotonda, grazie ad un finanziamento del MiBACT e dirette dalla Soprintendenza archeologica della Basilicata..
Nel 2006 è stato rinvenuto uno scheletro quasi completo di Hippopotamus antiquus, mentre nella campagna di scavo del 2007 si sono trovati resti fossili di diversi cervi incompleti..
Dal 2008 le collezioni sono state trasferite nell'attuale sede museale in Via Roma, 12.
