The MSOE Bridging Borders Program is an opportunity for both international students and members of the community to enrich their lives through a cultural exchange.
International students often feel isolated and experience culture shock.
They miss family, food and holidays from their home country.
At the same time, they are interested in making new connections and want to see how Americans live, work and play.
Befriending a student is a unique opportunity to share American culture and conversation while learning about another country..

How does it work?.

International students are matched with either an MSOE student called a “Conversation Partner” or an MSOE staff or faculty member called a “Friendship Family” to learn about American culture, but from different perspectives.
Participants can befriend one or two international students and are matched for one academic quarter.
However, matches often choose to stay connected much longer..
After answering a few questions about background and interests, participants are matched and “break the ice.” From there, participants will arrange to spend time together: once a week for Conversation Partners and about twice a month for Friendship Families..

Friendship Families help introduce students to a world outside of student life through activities such as American holiday gatherings, cooking at home or going.

Students want to see typical life in America, so activities like going to a grocery store or “hanging out” watching TV can be interesting.
