Detailed description is Située au coeur du Bas-Saint-Laurent, la MRC des Basques s'étend sur une superficie de 1 130 km2.
Sa population de 9 034 habitants (mars 2012) est répartie dans 11 municipalités avec Trois-Pistoles comme ville centre.
Suite à l'entrée en vigueur de la Loi sur l'aménagement et l'urbanisme (loi 125) en 1979, le gouvernement du Québec a d'abord procédé à une tournée de consultation auprès des conseils et des citoyens des municipalités locales et des conseils de comté.
C'est à la suite d'un consensus que la MRC des Basques a vu le jour le 1er avril 1981.
Son siège social est situé au 400-2, rue Jean-Rioux à Trois-Pistoles..

Origine du nom : son nom rappelle les marins basques qui venaient pêcher et chasser la baleine dans le Saint-Laurent au début du 17e siècle.
Des traces de leur présence ont en effet été découvertes sur une île située à quelques kilomètres de la côte et qui porte maintenant le nom d’île aux Basques
