According to contemporary news accounts, the first flour mill was built on the site in 1869.
The mill changed hands several times, including owners Captain Wm.

Regiment of Wilder's Lightning Brigade.
The mill found stable owners in the Kirtland Brothers, expert millers from New York who operated the mill for thirty-five years, until about 1914.
The mill then passed through a series of failed owners until finally falling into receivership.
In 1916, Sam A.
Glezen and Charles Bissey, farmers from Ireland, Indiana with no milling experience bought the failed business.
By the mid twenties, S.A.
Glezen had bought out his partner and was milling as much as 212 bushels of wheat per day! .

Through the depression when farmers would barter sacks of wheat for kegs of flour, the WWII ration books, and the re-birth of small-town America in the 1950s, Mont Eagle marketed wheat flour, corn meal, and animal feed ingredients to the towns and farms of Southeast Illinois.
