Fondato nel 1558, sulla collina di Montevergine, ma si presenta allo sguardo del visitatore come un gioiello del tardo barocco siciliano.
L’aspetto del plesso cambia a seguito di due importanti eventi naturali: la colata lavica del 1669 che lo investe a nord-ovest e il terremoto del 1693 che lo distrugge quasi totalmente.
Dal 1702 iniziano i lavori di ricostruzione: al chiostro primigenio cinquecentesco, definito dei “Marmi” o di “Ponente”, si somma quello di “Levante” caratterizzato dal ricco giardino e dall’eclettico Caffeaos; al secondo piano il lungo corridoio dell’orologio conduce al giardino pensile del Noviziato e ai corpi architettonici del Vaccarini, dedicati alla vita diurna dei monaci: due refettori annessi alla cucina finemente decorata con ceramiche coloratissime, i magazzini delle derrate alimentari, costruiti sul banco lavico del 1669 (oggi “Museo della Fabbrica”) e infine la Biblioteca benedettina.
Nel 1866 il Monastero passa al Demanio Regio che lo destina a scuole, caserma e laboratori scientifici, determinando la compromissione dell’integrità dei decori e della struttura.
L’intervento di recupero, adattandolo alla funzione di sede universitaria, porta la firma di Giancarlo de Carlo.
L’architetto, in collaborazione con l’Ufficio Tecnico d’Ateneo, realizza tra l’altro l’Auditorium, la Biblioteca di Facoltà nella parte cinquecentesca e l’integrazione dell’annessa emeroteca, mediante strutture sospese, ad una Domus romana rinvenuta durante i lavori.
Dal 2002, l’UNESCO ha inserito il Monastero nella Lista del Patrimonio dell’Umanità’
