His Excellency Mr.
Khatami was born October1943 in Ardakan, Yazd Province, in a religious family.
His father was a well known Islamic Clergyman.
He is married to Zohreh Sadeghi in 1974 and has two daughters and a son: Leila (born 1975), Narges (born 1981), and Emad (born 1989)..

Education:.
In 1961 after graduation from high school in his hometown, President Khatami went to the holy city of Qom to study theology and then in 1965 he continued his studies in Isfahan.
He also studied philosophy at the University of Isfahan where he obtained his BA in 1969.
In 1970 he entered the University of Tehran to study education and graduated with an MA.
After graduation he went back to Qom to follow up his philosophical studies.
President Khatami speaks: Arabic, English and German in addition to Persian..

Political Career:.
Before the Revolution President Khatami participated in Islamic Movement in Hozeh (Seminary) in Qom.
After the revolution in 1979 he replaced Ayatollah Dr.
Beheshti as Head of Hamburg Islamic Center.
The Center turned into an Islamic campaign center when the late Imam Khomeini went to France.
He represented Ardakan and Meibod constituencies in the first term of the Majlis [Parliament] in 1980.
He was also appointed as the Leader's (Late Imam Khomeini) representative in Kayhan newspaper Institute in 1981..
From 1982 to 1992 he was the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
During the 1980 - 1988 Iraqi imposed war, he served at different responsibilities including deputy and head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and chairman of the War Propaganda Headquarters..
In 1992 he was appointed as Advisor to former President Rafsanjani.
In 1996 He was appointed as a member of High Council for Cultural Revolution by the Leader of Iran.
As President he was the head of the council.
President Khatami was elected as the fifth President of the Islamic Republic on May 23, 1997 elections by gaining 20,078,178 votes, almost 70 percent of the votes cast.
He was re-elected on June 8, 2001 for a second term.
His second term ended on August 2, 2005.
He is a member of the Central Council of Militant Clerics Society.

حجت الاسلام والمسلمين سيد محمد خاتمی فرزند مرحوم آيت الله سيد روح الله خاتمی در سال ۱۳۲۲ هجري شمسی ـ ۱۹۴۳ ميلادی - در شهر اردكان واقع در استان يزد متولد شدند.
پدر ايشان از روحانيون نيكنام و بلند آوازه آن ديار ، عالمی فرزانه ، فقیهی روشن بين و عارفی مبارز و مردم گرا بود .
آن مرحوم موسس مدرسه علميه اردكان بودند و امامت جمعه شهرستان يزد را بر عهده داشتند .آقای سيد محمد خاتمی دو برادر و چهار خواهر دارند .
در سال ۱۳۵۳ با خانم زهره صادقی ازدواج كردند كه ثمره اين ازدواج دو دختر و يك پسر به نامهای ليلا (۱۳۵۴) ، نرگس (۱۳۶٠ ) و سید عمادالدین (۱۳۶۷) است ..
تحصيلات ابتدایی ، متوسطه و دبيرستانی ايشان در اردكان طی شد و در همه اين سالها جزء شاگردان ممتاز كلاس بودند .
در سال ۱۳۴٠ (۱۹۶۱ ميلادی ) پيش از اخذ ديپلم به شوق تحصيل در علوم و معارف دینی ، در حاليكه بخشی از مقدمات را در محضر پدر گرامی شان فرا گرفته بودند ، رهسپار شهر قم شدند و در همان سالها ديپلم متوسطه را نيز در رشته طبیعی دريافت داشتند..

آقای سيد محمد خاتمی ضمن حضور در مبارزات سیاسی حوزه در سالهای ۴۱ و ۴٢ به مدت چهار سال تحصيل در حوزه علميه قم "مقدمات " و " سطح " را فراگرفته و در سال ۱۳۴۴ هجری شمسی ( ۱۹۶۵ ميلادی ) برای تحصيل در رشته فلسفه به دانشكده ادبيات اصفهان راه يافتند و همزمان با آن ، سطوح عاليه علوم دینی را در حوزه علميه اصفهان ادامه دادند ..
در سال ۱۳۴۸ هجری شمسی ( ۱۹۶۹ ميلادی ) با درجه كارشناسی از دانشگاه اصفهان فارغ التحصيل شده و بدنبال آن و عليرغم داشتن شرايط اجتهاد برای معافيت از خدمت سربازی "بالاجبار به خدمت سربازی اعزام شدند"..
در سال ۱۳۴۹ هجری شمسی ( ۱۹۷٠ ميلادی ) در دوره كارشناسی ارشد علوم تربیتی دانشگاه تهران پذيرفته شدند و به ادامه تحصيل پرداختند و در حاليكه كه امكان استفاده از بورس تحصیلی دوره دكترا در خارج از كشور از طرف دانشگاه تهران برايشان فراهم شده بود به شهرستان قم بازگشتند و طی چندين سال اقامت ، با كوشش و جديت مراحل دروس " خارج " " فقه و اصول " و دوره عالی فلسفه را در محضر آيات عظام و استادانی چون مرتضی حائری يزدی (قده) ، وحيد خراسانی ، سيد موسی شبيری زنجانی ، شهيد مرتضی مطهری (قده) و عبدالله جوادی آملی گذراندند ..
همزمان با اين ايام در دروس خصوصی شهيد مطهری پيرامون فلسفه هگل و ماركسيسم و معارف و كلام شركت می جستند ..
آقاي خاتمی كه همواره دغدغه های شخصی خود را در زمينه معارف ، علوم دینی ، اجتماعی و فرهنگی پيگيرانه دنبال می كردند ، نسبت به تاليف آثاری اهتمام كردند كه حاصل آن دهها مقاله ، گفتار و كتاب می باشد..

سال۱۳۵٠ : بازگشت به قم و ادامه دروس عالی حوزوی بمدت ۷ سال تا بالاترين درجه تحصيلات حوزوی اجتهاد - معادل دكتری.

سال ۱۳۶۱ : وزير فرهنگ و ارشاد اسلامی در كابينه جناب آقای مهندس مير حسين موسوی.
سال ۱۳۶۸ : وزير فرهنگ و ارشاد اسلامی در كابينه جناب آقای هاشمی رفسنجانی.
سال ۱۳۷۱ : مشاور رييس جمهور و رييس كتابخانه ملی ايران.
سال ۱۳۷۱ : آغاز تدريس در دوره‌های كارشناسی ، كارشناسی ارشد و دكتری در دروس انديشه سياسی ، فلسفه سياست و انديشه سياسی در اسلام.
سال ۱۳۷۵ : عضويت در شورای عالی انقلاب فرهنگی به فرمان مقام معظم رهبری.
