Detailed description is Minnesota 4-H is working with the Office of Naval Research & their SeaPerch program to allow kids the opportunity to be trained in the creation of an ROV & to learn about watershed science.
Minnesota’s surface water area is one of the greatest in the nation, containing a three-way continental divide watershed with flowage North to Hudson Bay, East to the St.
Lawrence River, and South to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Minnesota 4-H Aquatic Robotics & Water Quality Science initiative is using the SeaPerch Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to engage youth in a 4-H field-based STEM education initiative designed to foster the next generation of scientists and engineers.
By designing and building their own ROV,youth can learn about engineering.
By conducting water sampling and observing habitat, they learn about biology.
They learn about physics through buoyancy and electrical wiring.

Year one, the pilot phase.will establish teams in each of Minnesota’s three continental divide watersheds, with a total of 15 teams across the state.
The first year will reach 75 youth across Minnesota’s 87 Counties.
Year two will expand to reach 67 counties, with 50 youth per county, through 4-H camps, after-school programs and other experiential learning opportunities for a total of 3,350 youth.
Reaching underserved, diverse youth is a priority of this initiative.
The SeaPerch ROV is already being integrated into program efforts on the Red Lake and White Earth American Indian Reservations in Minnesota..
