Mentors’ purpose is to provide a one-to-one relationship between accomplished adults and socially or economically disadvantaged students.
The focus of the program is to help bright young people reach their full academic potential; its key goals are to encourage completion of high school and to inspire those with the capability to pursue post-secondary education..

Who is a Mentor? .
There is no such thing as a profile of an "ideal" mentor.
Anyone who has attained success and accomplishment in his or her respective profession and is willing to make the commitment necessary to be helpful to a protégé can be a mentor.
A mentor is a friend, and advocate and a listener.

The greatest form of commitment required of a mentor is sharing a part of him or herself with a protégé.
The sharing between mentor and protégé is structured to the benefit of both.

A mentor is asked to make a one year commitment.

Mentors for Berks Youth started about 28 years ago by a group of engineers and educators (Tom McMahon, former mayor of the city of Reading was a young engineer whose vision was Mentors for Berks Youth.) as a grass-roots organization to help students finish high school and enter post secondary education.
Ideally, students will return to employment in the greater Reading area where they can become contributing members of their communities.
