Mark’s involvement with horses started at a very young age.
He won a scholarship to work on Coolmore's National Hunt Stud in Ireland when he was 18.
On returning he worked at Stockwell Stud at Diggers Rest where he handled all the stallions.
He then returned to SA and worked with David Balfour and was also employed by Ken Sweeney before he sought his own trainer’s license.
Mark has been successfully training horses since he was 21.
He is the one of the youngest to ever be granted a trainers license in South Australia..

Mark started his training career in rented stables at Morphettville in SA owned by John Hawkes with a very small team which were all owned or partly owned by his family.
Over a short period of time the team increased which necessitated a move to rented stables owned by the South Australian Jockey Club on Anzac Highway at Morphettville.
As success started to come his way so did additional horses and owners.
He then transferred his operation to a property in Grafton Avenue before eventually buying the property next door..

In 2000, he opened a satellite stable at Ballarat.
The Ballarat Turf Club provided him with a 12 horse barn situated at the Ballarat Race Course.
Mark moved to Ballarat to operate the stable, while his father Bill, continued with the operation in SA.
Damien Holland, (Mark’s brother in law) and stable jockey also made the move to Ballarat..

In 2008, the Morphettville property was sold and in August 2009 the South Australian operation was closed down..

In 2011, Mark moved into a state of the art complex at Ballarat which has a water walker, dry walker, big and airy stables and well fenced day yards.
The complex is situated very close to the Ballarat Race Course where he can access the excellent training facilities including the newly constructed up-hill track.
He is now dually focused on a very small team that he trains as well as overseeing the pre-training operation..
