A Maratona da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro, carinhosamente chamada de Maratona do Rio, ocorre anualmente desde 1979, com exceção dos anos de 2001 e 2002.
Realizada em parceria com a Prefeitura e o Governo do Estado do RJ, a Maratona está presente no calendário oficial da cidade, reunindo milhares de pessoas todos os anos, dentre maratonistas profissionais, corredores amadores e espectadores.

O evento reúne cerca de 30 mil corredores distribuídos em três categorias: Maratona – 42 Km, Meia Maratona - 21 Km e Family Run – 6 Km.
Há também o público que marca presença, chegando a mais de 50 mil pessoas.

A prova ocorre no meio do ano, geralmente em junho ou julho, para que o calor não seja mais um obstáculo para os maratonistas.
A Maratona principal tem sua largada no Recreio dos Bandeirantes e chegada no Aterro do Flamengo e é favorecida pela ausência de desníveis significativos.
Disputadas simultaneamente, a Meia Maratona tem largada na Praia do Pepê, na Barra da Tijuca, e chegada no Aterro do Flamengo, e a Family Run é realizada inteiramente no Aterro do Flamengo.
