La Manufacture a accueilli ses premiers étudiants comédiens en septembre 2003, à Lausanne, dans cette ancienne usine de taille de pierres précieuses qui lui vaut son nom.
Fondée par les cantons romands et la partie francophone du canton de Berne, la Manufacture est intégrée à la Haute Ecole Spécialisée de Suisse occidentale (HES-SO) et délivre des titres de Bachelor et de Master reconnus au plan européen..

La dimension multidisciplinaire de l’école se reflète dans chacune de ses missions : les formations de base et continue sont menées par des intervenants issus de différentes pratiques; la recherche artistique engage des projets en partenariat avec des institutions et des chercheurs en Suisse et à l’étranger ; le centre de services propose une large palette de prestations focalisées sur les arts scéniques..

Après la filière d’études Bachelor théâtre, centrée sur la formation du comédien, puis la formation professionnelle initiale aux métiers techniques du spectacle ouverte en 2011, la Manufacture a ouvert en septembre 2012 une filière Master théâtre, orientation mise en scène.
En septembre 2014, l'école a ouvert une nouvelle filière inédite en Suisse, un Bachelor en Contemporary Dance, en collaboration avec la Zürcher Hochschule des Künste ZHdK, et en partenariat avec P.A.R.T.S à Bruxelles et l'Université de Berne.
Elle est ainsi la seule école du paysage francophone à réunir sur un même site des formations de niveau supérieur en danse et en théâtre.
