Detailed description is One of those places in the Quad Cities that is a must for those out of towners Mama was born Betty Jane Franklin on May 9, 1925.
She was raised during the Great Depression.
In March 1941, she met Carl E.
Compton.
They knew each other approximately two weeks when they eloped to Kahoka, Missouri on April 5, 1941, He was five years her senior, although he didn’t know at the time .On the ride home, she announced to Carl that she had fibbed on her marriage certificate and she was not 18 years old but 16! Taken back, he exclaimed, “Oh, my God! I’ve robbed the cradle!”.

In December, the infamous Pearl Harbor bombing occurred.
Carl and Betty found their first year together being torn apart by separation because, like so many, Carl was drafted into the Army and sent to Okinawa.
Like many women during the war, she took a full time job in a chicken factory to help feed our soldiers over seas.
With Carl gone to war Betty kept busy on those lonely nights by spending time with family, writing letters to her love overseas, and self teaching her self how to cook.
This is when she began her life long affair with cooking food.

Carl came out of the war with valuable skills and put those to use right away providing for his family by hauling goods all across the nation for Dohrn trucking company.
Little did they know they would help be responsible for the baby boom generation and with Carl on the road and a growing family, it gave Betty the opportunity to master her unique style of cooking..

Betty grew up and lived in times where being a picky eater just wasn’t an option and you ate whatever was put before you, so Betty began the journey of teaching herself how to cook trying to make the unsavory taste good.
Now according to Carl, Betty couldn’t even boil water when they met.
The first six months of their marriage was filled with experiments gone wrong in the kitchen.
However, when Carl got back from the war, he remembers never wanting to eat anywhere else! Whenever asked, she attributed her amazing cooking to her self- taught “keep it simple” technique.
A pinch of this, a dab of that, and with a few taste tests later… perfection! .

As the family grew up, it was always known to go to the Compton’s to eat.
Any special occasion or holiday was exciting because you got to enjoy her cooking with the ones that matter the most.
The food was good and plentiful.
Nothing matched: the silverware was mix-matched, dishes were mix-matched, but it was always clean and comforting.

April, Mama’s daughter, met and eventually married Jeff Adamson.
Jeff affectionately coined the name “Mama Compton.” No one could cook like Mama! .
