There is so much learning to be had in a simple yet rich garden bed and the time is ripe for growing school gardens in Maine! We would love to see a garden bed for every classroom in every school in the state, with support from administrators and community members, strong links to classroom learning standards, and abundant fresh produce for taste tests and lunch trays.

MSGN began as a program of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, offering assistance to educators since 2002.
We became a 501(c)3 and hired a coordinator in 2013, and have since provided services to help new programs find start-up information and connections; and existing programs find the support they need to thrive.

With our recent grant funding from the Quimby Family Foundation, the MSGN organized 12 regional gathering events, where we were able to meet and connect 130 educators and school garden supporters.
Our board members are volunteer leaders across a range of sectors, who join together to share their individual expertise in support of the success and expansion of school garden programs as a platform to connect young people to healthy food and outdoor environments.
We understand the challenges and strategies for success more fully because we have the perceptions of teachers, student counsellors, farmers, cooperative extension, the department of agriculture, and others on our board.
