Altı sene cezaevinde kaldı, tahliye oldu. 1987-1992 arasında Alparslan Türkeş'in "Gençlik Koordinatörü" olarak görev yaptı. 1989-1992 yılları arasında ise Milliyetçi Çalışma Partisinde MKYK üyeliği görevinde bulundu.1993 yılında Şehit Liderimiz Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu ile birlikte Büyük Birlik Partisini kurdu. 17 Ağustos 1999'a kadar bu partinin Genel Başkan Yardımcılığı görevinde bulunduktan sonra aktif siyaseti bıraktı. Hâlen "Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu Gönüllerde Birlik Vakfı"nın Genel Başkan Vekili olarak görev yapıyor.Ticaretle uğraşan Kadir Mahir Damatlar evli ve 4 çocuk babasıdır.
