Nos anos 50, um grupo de jovens, entre eles Rogério Fróes, Regina Pierini, Wilson Dray, Zelia Moraes, J.
Thomé, Dinear V.
Plaza, Carlos Branco e outros, liderados por Herculano Leal Carneiro, jovem dinâmico e idealista, criaram o TEATRO RURAL DO ESTUDANTE.
Este grupo, cujo talento despertou a admiração da engenheira Drª.
Elza Pinho Osborne, que os presenteou com a construção de um TEATRO DE ARENA, o qual mais tarde merecidamente ganhou seu nome.
O lançamento da “pedra fundamental” foi feito em 1956 pelo Dr.
Juscelino Kubtschek, então Presidente da Rebublica.
O teatro foi fundado em 1958.
Entre as personalidades presentes, estavam a Primeira Ministra da Guatemala e o então Prefeito, Negrão de Lima.
Esse grupo participou do I FESTIVAL NACIONAL DE TEATRO AMADOR EM RECIFE; de onze prêmios disputados, trouxe para Campo Grande nove , com a peça ZÉ DO PATO, escrita pela Drª.
ELZA OSBORNE.
Devemos a Drª.
Elza Osborne e ao Herculano Carneiro a construção do TEATRO DE ARENA ELZA OSBORNE, inaugurado em 11 de janeiro de 1958..
Por muitos anos o TEATRO DE ARENA ficou praticamente desativado.
Numa tentativa aqui outra acolá, para reerguê – lo, porém a necessidade de uma cobertura para o espaço, fez com que Regina Pierini e Ives Macena assumindo a administração do Arena em 1986, lançassem a campanha: “Cubra o Arena e descubra nossa Arte”.
E por longos anos, Ives Macena apresentou para inúmeras empresas seu projeto, para conseguir a doação de uma lona de circo para o Arena.
Foi então que com o notável empenho de Ricardo Macieira, hoje Secretário de Cultura do Rio de Janeiro, foi criado o projeto para ocupação das lonas das ONGs, utilizadas na ECO 92.
Em 1993, recebemos do digníssimo Prefeito na época, Dr.
Cesar Maia, a doação da 1ª lona para Campo Grande, que contou também com a valiosíssima colaboração de Fabio Ferreira, hoje Presidente do RioArte.
O Teatro de Arena, portanto, foi o pioneiro nesse empreendimento que deu certo: o projeto cresceu surgindo daí O PROJETO LONAS CULTURAIS hoje reconhecido pelo Mercosul e ainda premiado no exterior com projeto sócio-cultural.
A comunidade de Campo Grande ganhou um espaço não apenas de lazer mas, principalmente, um espaço para que ela possa expressar suas manifestações em todas as áreas da cultura: música, dança, teatro, artes plásticas, etc.
