Detailed description is Dedicated to the restoration, preservation and operation of former LIRR G5s Steam Locomotive #35 as part of the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum.
LIRR #35 is a 4-6-0 G5s class steam locomotive, built for the Long Island Rail Road in 1928 by the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Shops.
The locomotive shuttled commuters between New York City and Long Island in the years that saw the effects of a Depression, a World War, and the raid development of Long Island.
#35 participated in the LIRR's Operation: Changeover end of steam ceremony in Hicksville in October of 1955, and after pulling a fan trip a week later, became the last LIRR steam locomotive to officially operate, after more than 12 decades of steam on the railroad..

Donated to Nassau County upon retirement, #35 was displayed in Salisbury Park (later Eisenhower Park) until an unsuccessful 1978 attempt to restore the locomotive to operation ultimately left the once majestic engine dismantled and essentially abandoned at the former Mitchel Field Air Force Base.
In the early 1990's, a new group took on the task of caring for the locomotive, and became the "Friends of Locomotive #35".
This group went on to form the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, and the locomotive was again relocated in 2001, this time to Oyster Bay..

#35 is currently undergoing restoration efforts through Steam Operation Corps, with an ultimate goal of operating the locomotive in Oyster Bay.
The first shipment of parts, including the locomotive's wheels and associated components, was shipped to our contractor in December of 2014, marking the long awaited transition from preservation to restoration, with several more shipments to follow.
While this $550,000 phase of the project is taking place, an additional $1 million must be raised for the restoration of the locomotive's boiler and firebox.
