Dominican Republic 2017.

We are pleased to announce our upcoming trips for 2017.
For the past ten years we have been doing humanitarian trips to the Dominican Republic where we have built homes, schools, worked with orphanages, sponsored children’s programs, worked with street kids, and much more.
This will continue, and we are adding a second trip that will be geared towards our Undercurrent Youth Group..

Why Go?.
.
This is a life altering experince that we believe everyone should do at least once in their lives.
Participants will become part of a team that will see and experience, first hand, life the way much of the world actually lives it.
They will take part in helping families receive homes, spend time with children in orphanages, villages, on the streets, and schools for sponsored children.
You will help with construction projects, child / youth events, and you will see the results of the sex trade and poverty on the lives of the local population.
Most importantly, you will learn how you personally can make a long term difference in the lives of others..

What are the Dates?.
.
1st week of May.
.
Each trip will be for 8 days, 7 Nights.
The dates can change 1-3 days earlier or later due to flight availability, and will be confirmed by Jan 15th, 2015..

Who is eligible to go?.
.
The Undercurrent Humanitarian Trip is open to all those 16 and up..
.
The Undercurrent Youth Group Trip is open to all those 13 and up.
This trip is open to all youth who are part of Undercurrent Youth Group, other youth ministries, and youth who would like to take part.
There is a faith component in this trip..
.
Families are welcome who have younger children, or youth who have an approved chaperone traveling with them..
.
All applicants who are accepted must agree to our code of conduct to take part in our trips..

Where are we going?.
.
The trips will focus on two areas in the Dominican Republic.
One will be Sosua and the other Nagau.
We will fly in and out of the Puerto Plata Airport directly from Halifax or Toronto.
Others can join us from other locations, but participants are responsible for any addition expenses..

Where will we stay? .
.
While is Sosua we will be staying at a resort called the Casa Marina.
While in Nagau we will be staying a mission house run by Everyday Ministries..

What is the cost?.
.
The cost for the trip is $1999 if you are flying out of Halifax and Toronto.
This trip starts at the Airports where you will meet your team leaders..

What’s included in cost?.
.
– An orientation weekend at Undercurrent (All participants must attend in March) This will be a Friday evening and Saturday event..
.
– Airfare and all transportation in the Dominican..
.
– Spanish language and cultural lessons..
.
– Lodging, meals, interpreters, exit taxes, and all in-country expenses.

– Medical insurance (Note: Insurance does not cover injuries incurred through certain thrill-seeking adventures such as motorcycling, para-sailing or zip-lining).

– Chaperones (minimum 1 adult leader per 5 youth).

– Approximately $300 of every applicant’s fee goes towards construction and medical projects..

How do I apply?.
.
First, fill out our initial online application.
2nd, printed applications must be received on or before Nov.
15st.
Applications submitted after this date will be subject to late fees (described below).
Applicants will be notified promptly if application is not accepted.
Once application is accepted, you may begin fundraising and seeking donations to offset the cost of their initial payment..

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION.
.
1 – Applicant must meet all general requirements.
Applicants will be considered on a first come, first serve basis..
2 – Applicant possesses the skills or gifts needed for the identified project, and expresses interest in the purpose of the particular short-term trip..
3 – Applicant demonstrates a level of maturity and life experience to be able to fit well as a team member and to respond to the leadership of another person..
4 – Applicant is known to possess characteristics that will enable effective work in a cross-cultural environment..
5 – Applicant has read, understood and signed the Volunteer Waiver of Right and Code of Conduct..
6 – Applicant must submit a written reference from someone who knows the applicant well..

FEES & FUNDRAISING.
.
An initial deposit of $500 must be paid by Nov.
2st.
Applications submitted after this first payment will be subject to a late fee of $100, to be paid with initial deposit.
Second payment of $750 is due on or before Jan.
1st.
Final payment for all outstanding accounts will be due by Feb.
22th.
If amounts are not received by payment dates, all payments will be forfeited..

All payments and donations must be made through Canada Helps (www.canadahelps.org), an online donation website that enables applicants to keep track of their money-raising progress.
CanadaHelps will also issue tax receipts for all donations.
Instructions for setting up an account will be provided at the meetings.

For Youth – WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL?.

Lighthouse/Undercurrent Mission trips exist to give people the opportunity to serve others.
Our goal is to provide an experience where you can learn how to become a person who is involved with making long term changes in the lives of the poor, neglected, and needy of our world.
This is a great learning experience for all youth involved.
Although you will be missing a week of school, students will have designated times in the evening to work on homework together.
Leaders and staff will be available for any student needing help with their homework.
Students will be encouraged to talk to their teachers and principals about work that will be covered during the trip..
