Il Centro Sociale Leoncavallo nasce il 18 ottobre 1975 con l’occupazione di una fabbrica in via Leoncavallo al 22 da parte degli organismi di base del quartiere.
Dopo uno sgombero a cui seguì una durissima resistenza nell’agosto del 1989, l’allora conosciuto Leonka si trasferì in via Salomone per poi ricollocarsi nel 1994 presso l’attuale sede di via Watteau, 7..
La continua lotta antifascista con la commemorazione ogni anno dei compagni Fausto e Iaio assassinati nel 1978, l’ospitalità e l’integrazione di immigrati e dei senza voce creando “l’accoglienza per migranti” e dando decine di pasti gratuiti al giorno alle persone che ne hanno bisogno; l’incontro tra generazioni diverse cercando di interpretare il presente e sognare il futuro organizzando dai dibattiti politici alle serate di elettronica, jazz, reggae, hardcore e cinema alternando corsi di teatro e di musica; la creazione dell”Associazione delle mamme antifasciste del Leoncavallo” che mantiene viva la memoria, sono parte del percorso che in tutti questi anni il Leoncavallo, diventato dal 2001 Spazio Pubblico Autogestito, continua e continuerà a fare per portare la propria voce all’interno di una città che ormai sembra appartenere ad un passato da cui è necessario uscire..
