Len was raised and educated in South Auckland, then studied law at the University of Auckland.
With a strong sense of community service instilled by his family, Len’s involvement in community issues started early on.
He was a co-founder of the Otara Fleamarket, and later the innovative Otara Health community service, the Howick Free Legal Service, and the East Tamaki Business Association.
As a lawyer, Len was a partner with Wynyard Wood, going on to establish the East Tamaki branch of the firm.
His political career began in 1992, when he became Manukau City Councillor for Otara. He was elected as Mayor of Manukau City in 2007, and of all Auckland in 2010.
Len’s wife, Shan Inglis, is a partner in an Auckland law firm. They have three daughters and a grandson. Len enjoys gardening, music and spending time with his family.
He is passionate about Auckland and was committed to working across political boundaries to achieve the best for the region and its people.
His six years as Mayor of the united city finished in October 2016.
