Em 16 de outubro de 1989, um grupo de pessoas de vários segmentos da sociedade, percebendo a necessidade de preencher uma lacuna na assistência aos idosos carentes de Novo Hamburgo, fundou a Instituição de Amparo e Assistência ao idoso..

O prédio de 1.880m² teve lançada a sua pedra fundamental, em 29 de junho de 1991, em terreno cedido em comodato pela Prefeitura Municipal de Novo Hamburgo..

Em 30 de julho de 1994, houve o ingresso dos primeiros idosos e foi nesta mesma data, que a instituição passou a se chamar Lar São Vicente de Paula..

O Lar conta hoje com uma diretoria voluntária, 31 funcionários e muitos parceiros, todos dispostos a dar o melhor de si para prover todas as necessidades dos nossos Vovôs e Vovós que lá residem.
