Detailed description is A small apple orchard located in Lancaster MA selling apples, blueberries and apple wood wholesale to local businesses.
Our Story:.
We moved to Lancaster five years ago and purchased a house in the middle of what was once the largest pick-your-own apple orchard in Massachusetts, long since abandoned and developed for housing.
Fortunately many of the trees were left behind despite the housing development, and after thirty years of neglect, the orchard had taken on the appearance of a thick forest.
Only after we decided to purchase the home did we realize that we had an orchard in our overgrown back yard and three months later, we began clearing the brush and vines that enveloped the trees.
We learned how to prune apple trees by watching U-Tube videos and pruned 65 trees the first year and another 45 in our second year for a total of 110 working trees.
We soon learned about proper spraying techniques and tree care and within two years harvested our first crop, with the help of the entire DiTommaso family.
Each year, the family returns to help with our harvest.
Over time, we realized that trees, like people, need light and air to maintain a healthy life and we believe that a healthy tree is a happy tree – hence the inspiration for the name of our orchard, “La Mela Allegra” or in translation from the language of our Italian ancestors, “The Happy Apple”.
