Ans: I was born on October 27, 1977 in Matale, the youngest in a family of four. I grew up in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s hill-country capital. My tertiary education was cut short by my cricket career. Keen to follow in my father’s footsteps, I enrolled at the University of Colombo to complete a Bachelor of Law. But my selection for the Sri Lanka A tour to South Africa in 1998 was the start of a hectic tour schedule that left less and less time for personal study. I still hope to complete the degree one day, probably after cricket now. As a boy, I was a vociferous reader, a hobby I still love, especially on tour. I explored a wide range of subjects and hobbies at school. My friends still make fun of me being a young chorister and also trying to play the violin. As a student, I particularly enjoyed English literature and was fascinated by Greek and Roman Civilisations. In addition to cricket, I always loved tennis and, at one stage, I even thought about taking it up professionally. Thankfully, though, I choose cricket because I was certainly no Federer. I also liked badminton and table tennis. Nowadays I am learning golf – although frustratingly Mahela is still much better. I’ll catch-up with him soon.
I was the youngest child in a family of four. My father, Kshema, is a lawyer (as well as being my most vocal critic and batting coach). I have two elder sisters, Thushari and Saranga, and an elder brother, Vemendra. In May 2003 I married my childhood sweetheart, Yehali, with whom I fell in love with aged just 17.
