Der Krefelder Zoo beherbergt auf einer Fläche von 14 Hektar ca.
1000 Tiere aus rund 170 verschiedenen Arten.
Der überwiegend in kommunalem Eigentum befindliche Zoo legt seinen Schwerpunkt auf die Haltung von Menschenaffen, Großkatzen, afrikanischen Savannenbewohnern und tropischen Vögeln.

Mai 1938 als Lehrstätte für die Jugend auf dem Gelände des Grotenburgparks eröffnet.
Erster Zoodirektor wurde der damalige Erziehungsdirektor und Leiter des ehemaligen Naturkundlichen Museums, Heinrich Janßen.
