Detailed description is Kings Peak is a Forest Service Wildland Fire Module based out of Duchesne, Utah from the Duchesne Ranger District on the Ashley National Forest.
About Kings Peak:.
Kings Peak is a Forest Service Wildland Fire Module (formerly Fire Use Module) comprised of 10 positions, 4 permanent and 6 seasonal.
We are based out of Duchesne, Utah from the Duchesne Ranger District on the Ashley National Forest.
Other forest resources include Flaming Gorge, which is our sister module, 2 Type-4 Engines, and 2 Prevention Engines.
The module was organized and has been utilized in the management of wildland fires since 2005.
Our primary focus is providing fire managers with detailed/accurate fire information used to forecast fire behavior on resource benefit fires, in addition to supporting suppression efforts, and developing/implementing hazardous fuels reduction projects.

Kings Peak WFM is typically available for national fire assignments from May through November, wherein an array of assignment types and locations can be expected.
Spring and fall are dedicated to the accomplishment of district fuels targets through prescribed fire and mechanical cutting as designed by the module leader, who is also the Fuels Specialist for the district, and so develops the district fuels program.
Other types of project work can also be expected in the early and late season, such as prescribed fire prep, conducting fuel loading plots, hazard tree removal, pile burning, abating conifer encroachment, wilderness trail work, etc.
Often times these projects are performed in conjunction with other Forest Service programs (i.e.
Range, Wilderness, Wildlife, etc.).

Capabilities, Products, and Equipment:.
As a module, Kings Peak prides itself on having a well rounded background, covering all aspects of fire management to insure flexibility and to always be a valuable/viable resource no matter the assignment.
We are fully certified and meet all standards/qualifications outlined in the IWFM operations guide.
Moreover, we carry a multitude of specialty tools and equipment that allow us to provide additional services/products to fire managers.
Outlined below are some capabilities, specialized equipment, and products that Kings Peak is able to provide.

As a suppression resource we are equipped and capable of successfully performing the full spectrum of suppression duties ranging from line construction, hose-lays, burnout operations, HECM tasks, etc.
In theses duties, crew members are proficient in the use of hand tools, chainsaws, pumps, firing devices, helicopter operations, & MIST tactics.

Although suppression accounts for much of what we do, the majority of our assignments revolve around fire data collection and monitoring.
Upon arrival to an incident, a project folder is created where in all data is updated daily and presented in digital formats to make it as accessible as possible to fire management teams and the local forest.
At the conclusion of an assignment managers can expect a completed project folder containing data, observations, maps, videos, and photos that were gathered and compiled throughout the assignment.
The specific content of the folder is dependent on what is desired from management, though capabilities include fire weather observations, fire behavior obs, fire effects obs, smoke dispersal obs, photo logs with hyperlinks to corresponding observations, fuel loading transects, fuel moisture samples, weather graphs, perimeter growth maps, burn-severity maps, and structure assessments.
To ensure consistent and viable information, critical training is provided to crew members each spring.
Throughout training crew members become proficient with the specific sampling techniques, equipment, and computer software unique to WFM’s.
Following the two weeks of critical training, crew members should be familiar with the equipment and software utilized by the crew including belt-weather kits, kestrels, DBH tape, Go-No-Go gauges, clinometers, standard GPS units, digital cameras, Trimble GPS units, and laptop computers with software including Microsoft Office, DNR Garmin, GPS Pathfinder, ArcMap, and DD Woody.
If multiple objectives are to be met in a single shift, the crew has the ability to split into three qualified squads capable of effectively managing/monitoring fire activity.
As technology plays an important role in the gathering of fire information, we strive to stay current on new technologies and develop new means of assembling quality intel.

Self sufficiency is another attribute of our crew that proves to be a value.
We travel with an off-road trailer where we house additional equipment that allows us to be self sufficient.
While on an incident the trailer is used as our command post where a gas powered generator supplies electricity to run laptops, recharge electronics, provide printing capabilities for IAP’s or maps, heat a mobile oven for fuel moisture samples, and power a digital projector that can be used for briefings.
Additional items carried and stored in the trailer are office supplies, ATV, pumps/hose, high capacity water filter, and food to support the module at least 7 days.
Should there be a need to perform any duties in the wilderness or backcountry, we are equipped with backpacks, lightweight camping gear, water filters, and cooking kits, with proficiency in leave-no-trace camping ethics and cross cut saw operation skills.

Maintain a high standard of professionalism, conduct, and ethics on and off the clock.
Maintain a positive attitude in all situations and help to create overall positive crew morale.
Be on-time and prepared at all times, whether its assignments, breaks, project work, training, rehab, etc.
Keep things tidy, organized, and cleaner than you found them, in all surroundings including trucks, bunkhouse, camp, offices, etc.
Learn the skills unique to a Wildland Fire Module including sampling techniques, observation monitoring, data management, computers/technology, writing, etc.
Become an innovator through reading, asking questions, improving efficiency, and trying new techniques.
Exceed fitness standards (pack test, 1 ½ mile, and push/pull/sit-up) and provide encouragement to fellow employees to help them improve.
Maintain focus and situational awareness indentifying potential hazards and take the corrective actions to mitigate them, notifying fellow employees.

Working Conditions:.
Crewmembers are expected to be available to the module for assignment throughout the duration of employment, upon reporting in the spring and until termination in the fall.
If crewmembers desire to take leave, it should be discussed with supervisors far in advance, family emergencies are an exception.

Wildland fire modules typically work in remote backcountry settings where environments are usually steep and harsh.
Moreover, it is not uncommon to hike anywhere from 6 to 12 miles a day.
Expect to be hiking off-trail in harsh environments when it is hot, smoky, and with fire nearby.
The work is physically demanding and shifts can last as long as 16 hours a day for up to 14 days straight.
While on assignment expect to: sleep on a thermarest in a tent, prepare each of your meals, input computer data after fire-line shift, and be flexible/willing to safely perform all assignments.

Physical Fitness:.
We hold physical fitness in high regard on this crew.
The nature of the job involves hard manual labor over long periods of time, and all crew members will be expected to perform all work assignments.
Crew members should report in good physical condition and expect a fitness test on the first day: 7 pull-ups, run 1 ½ miles in 11 minutes, 25 push-ups in a minute, and 45 sit-ups in a minute.
Additionally, employees must pass the Arduous level fitness test at the onset of the season, a three-mile hike with a 45 pound pack in 45 minutes.
Crew members should also expect to participate in the strength and conditioning program as it will be included in the daily routine.
This will include workouts ranging from runs of 3-6 miles, weight lifting, and/or off-trail hiking with full gear.
Having good physical condition makes us more effective and makes the jobs at hand more enjoyable..
