Kartal, İstanbul'un Anadolu yakasında, Marmara Denizi kıyısında, Kocaeli Yarımadası'nın güney batısında yer alan, 2008 sayımına göre 501,209 (TÜİK) ve mücavir alanıyla birlikle 48.000 m² yüzölçümü olan bir ilçedir.
Kartal ilçesi, batıda Maltepe, kuzeyde Sancaktepe, kuzeydoğuda Sultanbeyli ve doğuda Pendik ilçeleriyle çevrilidir.
İstanbul'un en yüksek yeri Aydos Dağı ve İstanbul'un Balkonu diye adlandırılan Yakacık Tepesi Kartal'dadır.EtimolojiKartal'a bağlı Aydos Tepesi'nin adı Bizans döneminde "Aetos" idi.
Aetos Yunanca'da "Kartal" anlamına gelir ve semt günümüzdeki ismini buradan almıştır.CoğrafyaKartal ilçesi, Kocaeli yarımadasının güneybatı kesiminde yer alır.
Doğusunda Pendik, batısında Maltepe, kuzeyinde Sultanbeyli ve Sancaktepe ilçeleri, güneyinde ise Marmara Denizi ile çevrilidir.
