JFO's provide the capability to exploit those opportunities that exist in the operational environment where a trained observer can efficiently support air delivered fires, surface to surface fires, and facilitate targeting.
The JFOs add warfighting capability but do not circumvent or nullify the need for a qualified Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) or Forward Air Controller-Airborne (FAC(A)) during Close Air Support (CAS) operations.
