We tend to forget that Kashmir is not like any other State of the Union.
It had a sovereign status and as the legitimate ruler the then Maharaja was "forced by circumstances" to accede to India under a provisional Instrument of Accession giving the Union only Defence,Foreign Affairs and a few more selected subjects.After his abdication, the IOA awas endorsed by the Nehru-Abdullah Accord of 1952 and accordingly Kashmir was included in Art 1 of the Indian Constitution and Kashmir's Special Status was guaranteed under Art-370.
While the GOI respected her commitment, there was absolutely no tension between New Delhi and Srinagar.
But once the principals of Gandhi and Nehru were forgotten the erosion started.
The developments right through 1953 created misgivings and suspicions about the sincerity of Delhi.
Had Art-370 not been tampered with, perhaps we would not be so helplessly watching the present developments.
But I still feel everything is not lost and the situation can be redeemed - Restore the State's Autonomy and guarantee the three distinct regions that they will be equal partners in shaping the destiny of our people.
With world scenario changing so raidly, if we have to survive as a nation, we shall have to ensure that the federal structure is cemented.
It is possible by Autonomy here and elsewhere.
