Jefferson County Rodeo Association

Jefferson,

Montana,United-states - 59632

Detailed description is The Jefferson County Rodeo Amber Conger.
.
For the Jefferson County Rodeo Association.
.
The classic definition of a rodeo means to roundup or gather together.
And for as long as cowboys have been riding, people have been coming together to watch them do it.
This August, local Montana residents will be able to see a first-class rodeo in Jefferson County.
It is believed that the first official rodeo began in 1859 as an informal way for a group of ranch hands to prove who was better at doing their everyday duties.
Those humble beginnings grew to a following of around 60 million fans nationwide at present day with around 24 million attending in person and fans have many opportunities to see a live rodeo.
According to the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, there are over 600 rodeos held throughout the year all across the country from large towns to small.
.
.
From the dusty boots, to the faded hats, and shiny belt buckles, as well as the hard earned blisters on their hands, the cowboy is an American Western icon.
For many, going to a rodeo is an exciting way to witness history.
Many people look forward to the rodeo coming to town and that doesn’t just include spectators.
Local businesses often are provided with an economic boost in the communities where events are held.
“The rodeo is very important to the area as it draws several hundred to Boulder and makes it the biggest week of the year for the merchants.
Some businesses do more in this week than they do for three months, that money is passed on to other businesses and individuals in the area” said Dan Sturdevant, treasurer of the Jefferson County Rodeo Association.
.
.
The Jefferson County rodeo is held every August and encompasses events from bull riding to mutton busting.
It is a 3-day event beginning the last weekend in August.
The Jefferson County Rodeo is a volunteer group comprised of members who donate their time to help continue to bring the rodeo to town.
Tickets are priced at 6.00 for adults, 3 dollars for children 6-12 and free for kids 5 and under.
.
.
People travel from all over the state to come and watch the excitement.
The National Professional Rodeo Association calls rodeos “the most-intense, bone-jarring two hours in sports…8 seconds at a time.” Local rodeos are a great way for fans to witness the action..
.
Even with a large and loyal following, recent downturns in the economy have placed some pressure on many American Rodeos and in Boulder, Montana that news hits close to home.
This is nothing new, in the 1980’s the rodeo faced similar challenges.
With worry growing that the bills were not being paid and the rodeo was going to be shut down, the rodeo club and local townspeople came together to try and prevent the demise of the rodeo.
With the help of the stock contractor at the time, they were able to downscale the rodeo and keep the tradition going.
The Jefferson County Rodeo Association has been feeling the crunch but is hoping to buck that trend this year .
.
Ticket sales and attendance have actually increased recent years and the average attendance stands at about 1800 according to recent information from the Rodeo Association.
This actually provides new challenges, including providing adequate seating accommodations for the fans.
Current hopes are to build new bleachers and provide a partial roof.
Additionally, the weather poses a challenge as well.
“In Montana it can be cold, rainy or snow at any time and when it does the people stay away”, said Sturdevant.
The new accommodations could help with both of those situations.
.
.
Local support is an important facet of keeping the rodeo tradition alive.
So is affordability.
This component is in the minds of the Jefferson County Rodeo Association members.
“It will be a challenge to keep the prices low enough to bring the people in.
Worse case, we would have to downsize or stop putting on the rodeo.
Every year we do our best to come up with new and different things to bring the people in,” said Sturdevant.
.
.
For many cowboys and fans, it is never too early to start thinking about the next rodeo.
The deadlines for contestants are 2 weeks before the event and will be handled through the Northern Rodeo Association.
Cash prizes will be offered. The 2010 years’ purse paid out over $18,000 to contestants.
So get ready, because in August you and your family have a continued chance to be a part of growing and lively tradition.
Melody Grant, member of the Jefferson County Rodeo Association said, “The rodeo is a county wide event, which brings people and money into the community, as well as providing entertainment and profit making opportunities to local citizens.” And that gathering of people together is what the rodeo is all about..
