Tafari Makonnen, más conocido como Haile Selassie I, fue el último monarca en ocupar el trono imperial de Etiopía.Ascendió al trono en 1930.
En 1936 se exilió en Bath a causa de la invasión de tropas italianas ordenada por el dictador fascista Benito Mussolini.
Volvería a su tierra natal en 1941 tras la expulsión de los italianos con ayuda de tropas del Imperio británico.
En 1974 renuncia formalmente su trono frente a la Junta Militar de la revolución etíope encabezada por el teniente coronel Mengistu Haile Mariam, también conocida como Derg.
Desapareció un año más tarde, en circunstancias no del todo esclarecidas.
El Consejo de la Corona de Etiopía asegura que el emperador fue encarcelado por el Derg y luego asfixiado hasta la muerte por sus captores el 27 de agosto de 1975.
