'Jagoroni Durgapuja Committee' was established in the year 1966 to initiate the yearly worship of the Goddess "Durga" in Tool Road (Chatuspati Road) of Hailakandi, Assam.
The 1st President & the 1st Secretary of the Committee were Late Hariprasanna Sen & Sri Biswajit Dasgupta respectively, whereas, the Joint Secretaries of the committee were Sri Samarendra Bhattacharjee & Sri Yashawanta Chakraborty.
The name of the committee, i.e., 'Jagoroni' was coined by Sri Yashawanta Chakraborty himself.
The other active members of the committee were Late Phoni Bhushan Acharjee, Sri Manish Bhattacharjee, Sri Bidhan Deb, Sri Benu Dhar, Sri Bijit Dey, Sri Manoranjan Chakraborty, Sri Bijan Dey Sen & Late Shankar Purkayastha.
At that time, many contemporary youngsters from different lanes of Hailakandi used to have their daily meet at Late Phoni Bhushan Acharjee & Sri Biswajit Dasgupta's House.
So, some of those young personalities 1st made the proposal to initiate the ceremony at Tool Road & after organizing a general meeting the plan was ultimately practicalized.
