Detailed description is Aim: To develop marina facilities in East Loch Tarbert, with serviced pontoon provision at Tarbert and Scalpay.
The project will construct two complementary pontoon facilities in East Loch Tarbert and Scalpay Harbour to assist the regeneration and development of the two areas in Harris.
The facilities will provide 23 alongside berths in Tarbert and 25 alongside berths in Scalpay.
However, with rafting, berthing capacity can be increased to 90 between the two sites.
The development of two pontoon facilities in East Loch Tarbert ensures reliable, available berthing in virtually all weathers irrespective of wind direction and, with different characteristics the two areas offer, different types of visitor experience..
The Tarbert pontoon will be accessed from an existing small breakwater on the south side of the loch and comprise a 24m access bridge, 120m yacht pontoon headed by a 40m floating concrete breakwater/attenuator.
The Scalpay pontoon will be accessed from an existing storage area by the pier via a 24m access bridge to 40m and 80m pontoon legs angled away from the existing pier and to access deeper water.
Both facilities will accommodate small boats, cruise ship tenders, yachts and cruisers..
This project was first developed by the Tarbert Pier Users Association (TPUA) and was part of the Isle of Harris Local Outcome Agreement 2010-15 highlighting the development plans taken from a Harris wide consultation, TPUA initiated an initial Boat Berthing Development study through funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) the study was carried out by Tourism Resources Company in 2010, an initial feasibility report was delivered by Fairhurst in 2011.
In 2013 the project was taken on by Harris Development Limited, who has 20 years of experience developing community projects.
The latest Assessment of options, costs & economic benefits was completed in August 2014 by Marine Consultants Wallace Stone.
