JOHN'S JOURNEY AND HOW IT LEADS HIM TO MOTIVATE OTHERS.
.
I grew up in the west end of Louisville in a small shotgun house with 4 sisters, 2 brothers, my mom, dad, grandmother and aunt.
We had a roof over our heads, food in the refrigerator, clothes on our backs and each other.
We were very poor, but I never knew it.
I was born without a left hand but I didn't know I was handicapped.
You see, you can't miss something that you never had, be it money or a left hand..
.
My childhood wasn't different from any other boy's.
We went to school and church, climbed trees, rode bikes and played outside until supper time.
In the 5th grade my school closed, so I had to attend a different school that happened to have a strong sports program.
It was here that I first had an opportunity to play organized sports and I discovered that I was a pretty good athlete..
.
I played football, basketball and baseball at my new school, Holy Cross Catholic School.
I also learned that playing sports helped me fit in much easier with my new classmates and I was treated just like any other kid.
I continued to play football and basketball through the eight grade and was selected captain of both teams.
I was also elected captain of our school safety patrol..
.
To me, life was very normal.
I fit in well..
.
I attended Flaget High School, an all boys school, also in the west end.
I played football, basketball and baseball at Flaget until I turned 16 and got an after-school job.
I earned enough money to pay my tuition at Flaget, buy an older car and even buy my own clothes.
Life was good!.
.
At graduation, like most of my classmates in 1972, I could not wait to get a REAL job.
No college for me - I was too smart for that.
(I didn't realize at the time that knowledge was the most important thing I could ever acquire!).
.
It was during my search for a job with a future when I discovered that I was handicapped.
Not by my own standards, but by society's.
No big company would hire me; no one would give me a chance to prove that I could do the job.
In 1972 there was no disability act - discrimination against the handicapped was legal and practiced..
.
I had taken the exam for the US Postal Service and had scored high enough to be hired.
This was my big break, a federal job with great benefits and a real future.
I received my letter to come in for my interview to be hired.
During my interview, it was noticed that I only had one hand.
The interviewer said he needed to check with the company doctor and would be back.
He was gone about two minutes and returned saying that there were no jobs at the Post Office that I could perform..
.
I was devastated and heartbroken.
I have never been told that I could not do something.
After all, I had played sports in grade school and at Flaget.
I drove a car with a stick shift transmission and I rode a motorcycle.
In my mind there was nothing I couldn't do..
.
After not getting hired by the Postal Service, I resorted to working for the city of Louisville as a parking lot cashier at the Galt House Hotel.
More than a year after my disappointing rejection from the Postal Service, a former boss came to my aid.
I had worked for Paul during the Christmas season at Romar Gleason, a small appliances store.
When he found out about my unfair treatment at the Postal Service, he wanted to help.
Paul knew that my lack of a left hand was not a handicap and did not impede my work ethic.
His father was a postal employee and he confirmed that I would be a great fit for many jobs at the post office.
Paul spoke with Congressman Ron Mozzoli about my ordeal and arranged a meeting between myself and the congressman..
.
A week after meeting with Congressman Mozzoli, I had a meeting with the Post Master of Louisville, Mr Sal Devito.
Mr Devito agreed to give me an opportunity to work and prove that I was capable of performing the duties of a postal employee.
In 1974, I was hired as the only postal employee in the Eastern Region of the United States with only one hand..
.
In 2013, after 38 and 1/2 years of service, seven as a supervisor, I retired.
