Detailed description is The International Bodhisattva Sangha (IBS) was formally established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in November 2006.
One of our main goals is to educate inmates in the state prions about Buddhism, meditation and right way of life.
The International Bodhisattva Sangha (IBS) Prison Program was founded in 1995 by Master Venerable Hueiguanag.
Before renouncing his life as a layman, Master Hueiguanag was a student at the University of California in San Diego and taught a Buddhism class at a local temple.
His class focused on how to apply the Dharma in western culture.

In 1994, he did an on-air interview with one of his students, a disc jockey at a local radio station.
They discussed how to handle relational and personal problems from a Buddhist perspective.
An inmate at the Calipatria State Prison in California was listening and wrote to the temple expressing his desire to learn more about Buddhism and meditation.
In the letter he also requested Master Hueiguanag visit the prison and perhaps teach the inmates about Buddhism and meditation.

Since he was still a student at a Buddhist college, Master Hueiguanag, a recently ordained monk, was unable to meet with the inmates at that time.
However, he was determined to fulfill the humble request.
Therefore, he asked his devotees, Danny and Shirley Tam to facilitate the spreading of the Dharma.
That simple act initiated the IBS Prison Program, which has continued for the past 18 years..
