O Instituto de Biociências, Letras e Ciências Exatas - Ibilce/Unesp nasceu como Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras - FAFI - de São José do Rio Preto, criada pelo Decreto Municipal nº 249, de 25/8/1955.
O Decreto Federal nº 41.061, de 27/02/1957, autorizou seu funcionamento.
