Literal Meaning: Huki = pull lau = leaves, specifically, ki (ti) leaves.
Lanai = porch or deck..
.
Cultural Meaning: This is an old Hawaiian way of fishing, involving casting a long net from the shore, then enlisting a large group to help to pull the net to shore.
The net is lined with ki (ti) leaves which help scare fish toward the middle of the net.

History of the Song: “The Mormon chapel in Lâ`ie was destroyed by fire in 1940.
Viola Kehau Kawahigashi organized a Hukilau to rebuild the church, with the congregation contributing food, talent, time and energy.
Master fisherman, Hamana Kalili would supply the nets.
Kahili, minus the three middle fingers of his right hand would wave and only the thumb and little finger could be seen.
Some say this is the origin of the shaka sign.
A $5.00 fee was charged to enjoy the Hukilau, food and hula show.
250 people arrived for the first fundraiser in 1947; the church took in $1,250.00.
Jack Owens enjoyed this Hukilau in 1948.
That night, suffering sunburn, aches and pains, he was inspired to write this song.
Introduced publicly at a Methodist lû'au in Honolulu, it became an instant hit." ~ from "Our Honolulu" by Bob Krauss, Honolulu Advertiser, April, 1998.

HISTORY.
Wally and Roberta Wallace opened Gaylord’s in 1986 at historic Kilohana.
Wally passed away before he could see the opening of Hukilau Lanai in 2002, and in his memory Hukilau Lanai’s bar is named Wally’s Lobby Bar.
Wally’s beverage of choice was Crown Royal, thus we feature Crown Royal at the bar and Steak Crown Royal on the menu.
Russ and Paige Talvi, along with Paige’s Mother, Roberta (now Cable) owned 22 North Restaurant (formerly Gaylord’s) until January of 2011, at which time it was sold and returned to the name Gaylord’s under the current owners..
.
In 2010, Paige, Russ and Roberta partnered with Ron and Krissi Miller to transfer ownership of the Hukilau Lanai.
Both Ron and Krissi worked at the Hukilau since its opening in 2002 until the spring of 2009, and then returned as owners in April 2010.
