The Members and Friends of Hoyt UMC Welcome You! In 1876, the Methodist Church Society in Douglas Township had 35 members.
The first church services were held by Rev.
John Woodburn in the Woburn Schoolhouse three miles west of the present site of Hoyt..
On August 24, 1885, a charter was filed in the office of the Secretary of State.
Trustees Alvin Moore, Jeremiah Chubb, John Miles, J.W.
Pettijohn, Peter Stewart, Erza Swartz, and Daniel Vorhees came to an agreement with A.H.
Aikens for one acre of ground located on what is now the northern section of Hoyt Cemetary.
A building was erected for $1,800.00.
It was dedicated on May 23, 1886.
The Methodist Congregations held services every other Sunday.
On alternate Sundays, services were held by the Baptists and United Brethren Congregations.
A union Sabbath School was established by the churches October 2, 1887.
A Young People's Social Society was formed October 18, 1887.
The Ladies Aid Society has also been very active through the years.

In 1896, trustees purchased two lots on Highland Ave.
from A.D.
Walker for $275.00.
The original building was moved to this site and rededicated on July 5, 1896.

In March, 1905, the trustees voted to build a parsonage.
The Methodist Conference sent a permanent minister to the combined Hoyt and Mayetta charges..
July, 1910, trustees decided to tear down the old church and erect a new one.
Being unable to purchase 25 feet to the south of the church, the parsonage was moved further north to accommodate the larger building.
This building was dedicated February 26, 1911.
In 1961, a barracks was added and remodeled by church members for Sunday School use.
It was dedicated May 24, 1964..
In early 1991, funds were raised by the membership to purchase the lot to the south of the church from Angie Miller Brown.
The cost was $3,000.00.
It was purchased for future expansion..
In 1992 there were 130 members.
The church presently has 92 members.
