It is a faith-based, non-profit organization with two divisions, The HELP House and HELP Mobile Meals.
The HELP House provides emergency services through free clothing and food.
Funds, paid to service providers, are available for payment for utility bills, gasoline, kerosene, propane, medication, rent and/or mortgage payments, and temporary lodging.
The HELP House is located on 1910 Baggett Street, behind the Piggly Wiggly on Boundary Street.
Run by volunteers, HELP House is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m.
We are closed on major holidays.
Due to Beaufort County residents generously donating clothing, the HELP House does not charge for used clothing.
Once, in a 30 day period, people needing clothing need to present a picture identification card for each individual for whom clothing is needed.
Also, the last four digits of a social security number are needed for each person.
In case of a foreign identification card; the series of numbers on a picture identification card are used.
No food to feed the family, HELP House can assist with that too every three (3) months.
A Referral Form from the Beaufort County Department of Social Services is needed.
Once the client is approved by a HELP House interviewer; the client will receive food from our Pantry.
Keeping food on hand is a never ending task for Rev.

The HELP House is affiliated with the Piggly Wiggly to purchase meats, jams and other canned goods at a discount.
The Department of Agriculture at the Lowcountry Food Bank in Yemassee provides surplus food items.
Many church congregations have food drives as do many Beaufort County Schools to help keep shelves full of nutritional foods.
We welcome donations from the public as well.
Dr.
Graham can provide donors with a list of food items that best meet nutritional needs.
Food items are also provided for those who are homeless and come in off the street.

Struggling to pay utility bills finds many families coming to the HELP House and other non-profits to assist in paying electric and water bills.
Sometimes a family’s funds just aren’t enough.
With a Beaufort County Department of Social Services Referral Form, HELP may be able to assist in making a partial payment in a client’s name.
In most cases, the utility bill must be past due and the client needs to have their original bill in hand.
Recently, a client desperately needing his prescription refilled for his heart medication came to HELP House.
He already had the Referral Form from the Department of Social Services.
With a few phone calls, the majority of the cost of his prescription was paid.
The medication must meet our criteria for approval of payment.
Other services with which the HELP House can assist with are: kerosene, propane, car gasoline and temporary lodging.
Receiving an eviction notice, with the possibility of loosing one’s home, is extremely stressful.
The HELP House may be able to provide funds toward a partial payment of one’s rent or mortgage once a year.
A Referral Form from the Beaufort County Department of Social Services is required.
Clients must present the eviction notice from their landlord or the agency which holds the mortgage on their home and a copy of their lease or mortgage agreement to HELP’s interviewer.
An address and phone number for the landlord or company must be a part of the eviction notice or mortgage agreement.
The landlord or company will be contacted to verify information provided by the client.
HELP of Beaufort also encompasses HELP Mobile Meals.
Beth Moon, our current director, works with social workers from Beaufort Memorial Hospital to arrange meals for those who are ill, disabled or are in need of meal preparation.
There is a small fee for the meals which are made in Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s kitchen.
Volunteers pick up the 60-70 meals and deliver them Monday through Friday.
HELP of Beaufort’s history goes back 39 years to 1973.
“In February of 1973, during a week-long Festival of Faith at The First Presbyterian Church, the women of the church thought that a project was needed to give a ‘hands-on’ experience in their neighborhood and serve Jesus Christ by serving others in His name.” “Meals on Wheels, for those who were elderly and disabled, were the first project to be implemented.
The ladies of the First Presbyterian Church worked with the Beaufort County Department of Social Services.
The geographic boundaries, at that time, covered Bay, Carteret, Ribaut and Boundary streets.” Now, HELP of Beaufort serves all those in Beaufort County through the two divisions.
“For about two years, Jarvista restaurant, later named The Galley, on Boundary Street, provided the first meals.
Coburg Dairy donated the beverages thanks to Joe Leland, a member of the church.
Later, Brahman Burger on Port Republic Street took over meal preparation after Jarvista closed in 1976.
With the closing of Brahman Burger, clients’ meals were prepared by Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s kitchen.
For the first time, each client received an individualized meal according to their dietary needs as recommended by their physician.
With the need for prepared meals increasing, “Meals on Wheels” joined with HELP Mobile Meals.
Up to that point, 97 volunteers had delivered 17,618 meals, with The First Presbyterian Church providing $30,000 to cover the costs.
HELP of Beaufort was founded in July 1979 by The First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort as a mission outreach to the needy of Beaufort County.
The HELP House’s first location was on 910 North Street, where it operated until 1985.
HELP requested that the city assist them with a new location; this new location was in old concrete structures in the Pigeon Point area, formerly the Woodward Apartments.
HELP stayed in these buildings, which were originally built for World War II civil service workers, until 2000.
The buildings were to be demolished so that the current Pigeon Point Park could be constructed on the site.
At that time, Beaufort City councilwoman Donnie Beer, aware of HELP’s efforts in the community, introduced Jay Snyder, then president of HELP, to 303 Associates.
With their assistance, 1910 Baggett Street, our current location, was rented for $1 per month.
With many volunteering to modify the interior of the building and assisting with the move; HELP’s new home opened to the public on May 8, 2000.” For four years, HELP served the people of Beaufort from that building; then the building burned in June 2005 and most of the items were burned or damaged by smoke and water.
The building was rebuilt and opened in January 2006.
With other non-profits in Beaufort County working to serve those in need, a system was needed to keep people from taking advantage of the services offered.
Steve Curless, HELP’s current director, started Community Services Organization (CSO) in February 2009.
With his leadership, all of the non-profits and The Department of Social Services started working together.
Initially, the arrangement was for all the non-profits to be connected by email.
Therefore, when a person was found to be in need, an email was sent to everyone in the CSO, thereby bringing everyone together to assist.
HELP of Beaufort continues to work closely with the Franciscan Center, The Salvation Army, Citizens Opposed to Domestic Violence and the Beaufort County Department of Social Services to meet the needs of our clients.
First Presbyterian Church started the endeavor that eventually became HELP of Beaufort.
Joining First Presbyterian Church are other churches and ministries.
The Baptist Church of Beaufort, Sea Island Presbyterian, St.
Helena Baptist, Tidal Creek Fellowship, The Carteret St.
United Methodist Church, St.
Marks Chapel, Grace Chapel AME, and Port Royal United Methodist Church donate financially to HELP throughout the year.
Ministries that also donate financially are the Winsome Sunday School, Horton Bible Class, The Link and the Beaufort Female Benevolent Society.
In order to ensure that client’s do not abuse the many agencies in our area which provide assistance, the online database, Charity Tracker, was introduced in 2010 by Steve Curless.
This program allows each organization the ability to see which services a client received, the date of service, the provider and the dollar amount committed.
There continues to be much need in Beaufort County.
With 21,836 people receiving assistance last year, we sometimes need a helping hand.

Financial assistance for rent, utilities, lodging, medical assistance and car gas assisted 1,163 people.
Mobile Meals served 14,296 individuals who were ill or disabled.” The “hands-on” neighborhood project undertaken by the ladies of The First Presbyterian Church continues to be a gift to many in Beaufort.
