Genesis of an idea.
September 4th 2010.
The first Christchurch Earthquake.
This date marked a turning point in Christchurch for many of the people who live here; it was the first time that we could see a significant change in the course of history – a change that took place instantaneously, right in front our eyes.

This unprecedented natural disaster spelled the end for many buildings which have served as important landmarks in the history of the Garden City.
For Bruce and Jason Pickering, it became the catalyst for an idea that would give some of that valuable history a new life or purpose.

Music and the Arts have always been an important part of the heart and soul of Christchurch so it seemed fitting that a small piece of the history that was “lost” be given a new lease of life as a viable and beautiful musical instrument.
Bruce and Jason wanted to do something that would give a small piece of history an opportunity to be reborn as a new life, rather than simply ceasing to exist..
Our aim is to raise money for the Arts in Christchurch; to give the community back its heart and to re-establish the passion and creativity that Christchurch is renowned for..
The Concept.
Having received permission to rescue wood from some historically important buildings that fell in the Earthquake, the idea of “HEART STRINGS” was born.
We decided to build a “family” of seven guitars, fittingly named “7.1,” each of which would represent different but equally important sectors of Christchurch.
Each of the guitars is made from timber from a historic building and because of that, each guitar tells a significant story based on the structure that provided the wood.
However, each guitar also represents so much more..
These guitars are unique pieces of art; they are aesthetically pleasing to the eye in the first instance, but then draw you in by the different layers of the story.

The Guitars.
In sympathy with the age of the timber used, a classic, single cut-away shape was designed, reminiscent of the 1960’s and 70’s.
Electronic components have been used that enhance the vintage effect.
The contours are subtle, as are the contours of Canterbury.
There are representations of the rivers and of the sudden change in topography and the areas of Canterbury that were the centre of the devastation are embodied in the designs..
The viewers of these pieces of art will discover the meaning in the design subtleties upon closer examination and, as with all art, will also discover their own personal significance within the grain and curves of these unique and meaningful guitars.
These are fully operational guitars with a sound that matches their look..
In addition to the series name “7.1”, each guitar is named specific to the timbers’ origins.
Also, each instrument will have an exclusive booklet describing the building(s) from which the timber was sourced as well as details and photos of the construction process and technical specifications..
The Timber.
Sourcing the timber was a major challenge and we are indebted to local identity Linda Giles, whose tireless efforts bore much fruit.
Her enthusiastic and zealous commitment to this project resulted in obtaining some rare pieces, as well as a warm and ready response from the donors.

The Final Piece.
February 22nd 2011.
The second Christchurch Earthquake..
Whatever we thought before this date was meaningless in the aftermath of this devastating event.
The heart and soul was ripped out of Christchurch and although so many more buildings were lost, this is not what we remember.

Therefore, we have chosen not to make another “family” of guitars to mark this event.
The extra pain and heartache of the second major earthquake was part of a continuing succession of events that began the previous September..
The Memorial Guitar.
In addition to the seven guitars described above, another guitar will be made from timber sourced from some of the buildings that fell in the February Earthquake.
Whereas the other seven are finished to celebrate the story of the timber and its revival, this guitar will focus on the people lost in the catastrophe as well as emotions felt.
The victims of the earthquake will be tastefully recognised in the design of the guitar – a simple, but meaningful acknowledgment of what is truly important.
On the back will be some expressions reflecting the feelings of all those affected..
The September earthquake was about loss of history and property.
The February earthquake was about loss of life and the destruction of the heart and soul of a City.
We would like The Memorial Guitar to be like a Phoenix – something beautiful and poignant rising from the death and destruction.

We envisage that The Memorial Guitar will be donated or gifted to the Christchurch Art Gallery or Museum in due course.

The Cause.
We are adamant that these beautiful and historic instruments be used to raise money to help the Arts Community of Christchurch get back on its feet.
There are many key organisations who have been displaced but these larger entities receive money from supporters and other funding organisations, whereas many smaller Arts establishments and events do not, and they are struggling to exist.
These important groups form the heart and soul of Christchurch to countless people in the community; a place to gather, be entertained, taught and moved but more importantly they represent history and we are passionate about retaining this history for Cantabrians.
Existing Earthquake funding is already stretched and anything we can do to help would be beneficial..
Our aim is to help them directly by auctioning the seven “7.1” Guitars and distributing the money raised amongst various Arts organisations in the Community..
The Auction Event.
We would like the Guitars to be auctioned at an event in September/October 2011 – a year after the first earthquake.
We are currently researching venues and will also be looking for at least one major sponsor as well as sponsors for each of the”7.1” Guitars.
The Memorial Guitar will not be sponsored or auctioned.
We will be selling tickets to the event which will include a dinner, entertainment from recipients and other artists and proceeds will go to the Arts Community..
The Gallery Show.
In order to raise as much awareness for the cause as possible we would like to display the Guitars in an Art Gallery prior to the Auction.
This will serve two purposes; it will allow members of the public to view and appreciate the Guitars and feel the sentiment behind the design and creation of this idea.
In addition, it will create awareness and allow the public to donate money to the Fund through a website that we will set up.
Not everyone will be capable of or interested in bidding on a Guitar, but many will be interested in donating money to restore the Arts to our Community.

The Website.
Creating a quality web presence for Heart Strings will be extremely important for generating interest on a local, national and even, International level.
We have been fortunate enough to have Mega Advertising, a successful website design company, offer to develop the website at their own cost.
They will be putting together a website that will enable viewers to see professional photographs of the guitars, see video of the guitars being played, read information about the building associated with the guitar and understand the significance of the designs.
In addition, people will be able to bid on the various guitars and make donations to the fund through the website.

We hope that by the time the Auction Event arrives the Guitars will already have a reserve created by bids from the website and this will mean that we raise as much money as possible for our cause – The Arts Community of Christchurch..
